Saikoku Kaido and Seaside Stroll Course
The course explores the old Saikoku Kaido road from the Edo period (1603–1868) and the modern retro streetscape of Onomichi. It finishes with a seaside stroll overlooking the Onomichi Channel and Mukaishima Island.

(a local line distinct from the Sanyo Shinkansen).

2 Onomichi Hayashi Fumiko Memorial Hall
The memorial hall displays relics of Fumiko Hayashi, a novelist based in Onomichi. Highlights in the neighborhood include an Ichirizuka milestone of the old Saigoku Kaido road from the Edo period (1603–1868).

Machinaka Cultural Exchange Center “Bank” (former Onomichi Branch of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation)
〈Japan Heritage〉
This former bank stands on the site along the Onomichi waterway that connected the Sumitomo family to the port city of Onomichi. The building retains the atmosphere of Onomichi, which was the commercial capital of Japan, and is a testament to the prosperity of the city in the modern era.

Onomichi Chamber of Commerce Memorial Hall(Former Onomichi Chamber of Commerce)
〈Japan Heritage〉
The Onomichi Board of Trade building dates back to the Taisho period (1912–26). The first floor offers an introduction to the history of trade in Onomichi, and the second floor replicates the original assembly hall. The site was home to the Onomichi magistrate’s office in the Edo period (1603–1868).

5 Nishiyama Honkan〈Japan Heritage〉
This place feels mysteriously nostalgic. It is a rare wooden three-story building from the Taisho Period. There were many guests from the port or shipbuilding, and there are even Western-style rooms for foreign guests.

6 Sumiyoshi Shrine〈Japan Heritage Kitamae-Bune〉
Hirayama Kakuzaemon was appointed magistrate of Onomichi in 1740 and reinforced the Sumiyoshihama area the following year, laying the foundation for a prosperous future. Sumiyoshi Shrine was relocated from Jodoji Temple to Sumiyoshihama at this time to protect the port from misfortune.
